Parrot in Darnick
Your loud cry got interest from the kestrel
and me I waded nettles and hawthorn looking
for its fledgling straight through your green
until you followed me back from school
to shout obscenities from the leylandii
that I would have cut down yesterday
they are my neighbours’ pets.
I showed you a banana and an orange
pulled from deep down my magician’s sleeve
your big beak gutting a plum
nothing left but a flap of purpled skin
you disappeared goaded by crows:
what on earth were you doing here again?
And why didn’t I go with you?
